Copyediting

A copyedit is a detailed edit which checks for consistency and correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

All suggested changes are made using either track changes in Word or suggested edits in Google Docs.

I use The Chicago Manual of Style as a guide for grammar and punctuation and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary for spelling choice unless otherwise specified.

My copyediting services include a minimum of two thorough read-throughs of your entire manuscript.

Turnaround time: Two to six weeks, depending on the length of manuscript and number of corrections needed. (I can give a more specific time frame estimate once I know more details about your project.)

My copyediting services include (but are not limited to) the corrections of:

  • spelling
    • word pairs
    • hyphenation
  • grammar
    • word usage
    • light restructuring of problem sentences
  • punctuation
    • commas, periods, ellipses, semicolons, apostrophes, dashes, etc.
  • consistency
    • in character, location, and storyline details
    • in spelling, capitalization, and punctuation choices

Proofreading

Proofreading is a final set of eyes to look over a manuscript and find typos before publishing. I only accept manuscripts for proofreading that have already been fully edited.

All suggested changes are made using either track changes in Word or suggested edits in Google Docs.

My proofreading services include one thorough read-through of your entire manuscript plus any additional quick passes it may require.

Turnaround time: Three to fourteen days, depending on the length of manuscript and number of corrections needed.

Proofreading checks for:

  • correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • consistent style and formatting
  • spacing issues
  • errors in the table of contents and the front and back matter of your book

How to know if you’re ready for a copyedit:

Your manuscript is nearly completed. You’ve applied feedback from your beta readers and are finished with making all your edits, and now you’re ready to have your manuscript edited for typos and technical errors. I will carefully read your manuscript twice through, marking suggested edits for you to approve or disapprove.

How to know if you’re ready for a proofread:

Your manuscript is polished nearly to perfection. You’ve had an editor go over it, it’s formatted, and you’re all but ready to hit publish. But first, you’d like one more pair of keen eyes to go over it and catch any remaining typos or glitches. I will carefully read through your book, searching for errors starting from your title cover page all the way through to your book’s back matter.

I offer free sample edits!

Send me the first 3,000 words of your manuscript and I’ll edit it for free. My sample edit is completely obligation-free with no strings attached and is a great way to see if I would be a good fit for your project.
